Getting Started Installing Solar Systems

Updated: Dec 18, 2023

Contractors installing solar PV panels

If you are looking to start your own solar installation company or if you are an existing contractor looking to expand your service offerings, we have some tips to help get you started in the solar energy industry. Let's explore how to get started in solar installations.

Solar Contractor Licensing

Each state is different in regards to licenses and requirements, but we believe that everyone should get their NABCEP PV Associate certification. This solar certification will give you a full understanding of how solar systems work, how to install them, and even how to sell them. It requires 40 hours of your time, which you can do online, followed by a 100-question multiple-choice test.

The next thing that you should consider doing is getting the appropriate solar contractor's license(s). Getting a builder's license is far more obtainable than getting an electrical license. If you are already an electrician, you are in a great position. If not, that work can easily be subcontracted by creating a relationship with a trusted electrician.

Find a Solar Panel & Equipment Supplier

After that, what you should do is build a network of suppliers to help you fulfill your orders. There are suppliers that can help you get materials to all 50 states. If you are looking for a supplier, please reach out to us at info@greenlancer.com, and we would be happy to put you in contact with one.

Build a Solar Pipeline with Sales and Marketing

Lastly, learning to sell is very important since solar is still a relatively new industry. There are some incredible software platforms out there, such as Solargraf, that make it very simple to sell solar and make it easy for customers to understand. Once a project is sold, GreenLancer can help you get your permits by drafting your plan set, and getting the appropriate engineers to stamp off on those solar permit plans.

Getting started in solar is not as difficult as it may seem. GreenLancer has built relationships with thousands of solar companies throughout the United States, and we are happy to help guide you to get started!
